
Sadly most people are overlimiting to compete with what are actually poorly done masters. If people want music louder the correct way is to turn up the volume. Ideally your compression will be on your busses to bring dynamics under control such that it's not really necessary on the master bus. Use as little limiting as you can stand! It comes with a cost. People are finally stepping a bit back from that now and you hear more people warning about it and mastering at a lower level. The "loudness war" drove everyone to over-compress their mixes. and especially with limiting you're trying to make the sound "louder" but it's actually destroying your dynamic range effectively by chopping off the top of your peaks. When you use compression and limiting you're reducing the dynamic range. To elaborate on what Verscat22 was saying:
